Training at ALEC
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Instrument Users
Users of ALEC facilities can be trained to operate particular instruments of interest to them. To independently operate a particular instrument you must have a “Driver’s License” issued by our lab for that instrument. To obtain a license you must:
- (1) attend a training session (see schedule below)
- (2) pass a written test
- (3) pass an operator’s test on the instrument (you will have sufficient practice on the time instrument to hone your skills before the operator’s test).
A training session will be scheduled each semester:
- The last session for UPLCMSMS training was Apr 20-23, 2009 (10am - 3:30 pm each day).
- The next session for UPLCMSMS and/or GCMSMS will probably be held in Fall 2009.
- You are highly encouraged to attend the 2009 UofA Chemistry Department mass spectrometry workshop June 15-17 to receive basic and introductory information about mass spectrometry before joining an Instrument User course in ALEC. Especially useful will be the Introduction, Sample Prep, Scan Modes, and MS/MS Small Molecule sections.
- Other individual trainings may be arranged by special request depending upon available time.

Emerging contaminants analysis in Arizona water: an educational and alliance building workshop
Fall, 2009 (tentative)
A one day course will be held to help establish contacts and interaction between students and professionals in academia, governmental agencies, and industry interested in the availability of quality water, and the chemistry of water contamination. Emphasis will be on the collection and analysis of emerging organic contaminants. The workshop will be held on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson. The workshop will (1) serve to disseminate current state of the art information, and (2) introduce regional, water quality professionals and water chemistry technicians, including students, to each other in order to establish contacts.

Other training opportunities:
Graduate-level course: SWES 563 - Advanced Soil and Water Chemistry(3 credits)
This course, which is offered every other year, builds on SWES 462/562 by focusing particularly on surface and colloid chemistry of aqueous systems. This year (Spring 2009) we will emphasize the behavior of micro-pollutants at mineral and organic interfaces, particularly metal(loid)s and trace organic contaminants.
For more information, contact Jon.
THE FOLLOWING IS ON HOLD UNTIL FUNDING IS SECURED
Summer intensive 1-week short course (for students and professionals working in water quality)
The course may include:
- (1) Water Sampling Methods
- Students will learn field sampling in Arizona State Parks (in Southern Arizona or along the Colorado River on a field trip held just prior to the course)
- (2) Instrumentation Methods
- Students will be taught on state-of-the-art instruments inside our laboratory at Univ. of Arizona; instruments will include, but are not limited to, LC and GC triple quadrupole mass spectrometers, ICPMS, AutoTrace SPE Workstation.
- (3) Lectures on Emerging Contaminant Issues
- (4) Opportunities for Community Outreach
